Faceless

Creepy Hospital Hallway

Jerome woke from his long sleep, alone in a room he did not recognize. He opened his eyes, slowly adjusting to the light. He looked around the room. He did not know where he was.

He lay in bed for a while, white-colored sheets covering his legs. A television was in front of him, raised up high near the ceiling. The steady drone of beeping noise from monitors was eerily soothing yet was a cause for concern.
“Why am I here?”, he thought.

“Nurse! Anybody!”, he called but no one came. “Where is everybody?” he thought.

Jerome slowly sat up, observing his condition. He did not feel dizzy. He slowly placed one foot on the floor, then the other, and stood up. Steady as she goes.

He slid his feet into the slippers he found next to his bed. They were just his size. He slowly shuffled to the door, taking care not to trip and fall.

Jerome looked outside, at a nurse seated at the station, busily typing away at the computer. Another was checking charts. She then looked up in his direction.

Jerome, taken aback by what he saw, trembled and stumbled quickly back inside. “What the hell is that? She has no face! She has no face! No eyes, nostrils, or mouth!” Instead, he saw a white smudge, like a painting that had the whole face painted over. A white empty void.

He peered out the door again. Both of the nurses were looking in his direction. Both did not have a face!

Jerome turned back to bed as both nurses got up and began walking towards his room. “I’m going crazy!”, he thought. “I must be crazy!”

He covered himself with the blanket, and he heard one nurse come in. She did not say a word. How could she, she had no mouth!

Jerome peeked out from under the blanket while she held his hand to take his pulse. He looked for a name tag, carefully trying to avoid staring at the face that was not there. Nurse Amber noticed him and looked down. He felt her look into him, an empty cold stare of nothingness and he screamed.

Jerome jumped out of bed, pushing his way past Nurse Amber, and ran for the door. As he ran down the hallway, he came across two male orderlies. “Help me!” he shouted. The orderlies turned toward him and Jerome stopped in his tracks. They too had no face! They started towards him as Jerome turned the other way.

The orderlies caught up with him grabbing his arms. Jerome struggled, and he screamed.

“Let me go! Why am I here? Where am I? Who are you? What do you want from me!” Struggle he might but it was useless. They dragged him back into his room and strapped him into the bed.

Amber was waiting for him, a syringe in hand. She then injected the clear liquid into his arm.

Jerome struggled, but he quickly lost consciousness and he slid into a dreamless sleep.

One nurse smiled and said “Mr. Williams! You are awake. We did not expect this for another two to three hours” as she stood up and approached. Jerome looked at her face. She had a lovely face, pleasant to look at.

“Yes Nurse, Lisa?” He looked at her name tag. “I had a rather bad dream.”

“Yes, an ugly and terrible dream.”, he thought to himself as he smiled.

Lisa smiled, “Well, let’s get you back to bed. Then I will get the doctor.”

“Thank you, Lisa.”, he responded. “Tell me, why am I here? I don’t remember ever going to a hospital.”

Faceless Nurse

“You came in here before my shift started. The doctor will explain things to you. All I know is that you seem fine and have nothing to worry about.”

“That is great to know” he nodded his head in agreement.

Jerome laid back in bed and pulled up the white sheet over his head. “That was a weird dream.” He closed his eyes one last time.

Lisa quietly heads for the door. She turns the light off as she steps out. She pulls the door shut and looks at the wall. The clock on the wall read 3:40 am. She slowly walks down the hallway and stops under the safety mirror, her featureless face staring back at her. She hopes that the morgue will now be quiet as it always has been.
